The post-summer state for fine hair
Delicate. Fragile. Weak. Given the alternate words for “fine”, it’s any wonder this texture survives hot weather. “Excessive heat and perspiration can cause loss of volume, and external elements like sun and water exposure make hair dry and more prone to breakage,” says Bernard Hill, North America hair care senior technical manager for Henkel, a parent company of Schwarzkopf. Make sure you know these everyday habits that are wrecking your hair.
The fix:
- Have long weekends and vacation time interrupted salon maintenance? You know what to do. “If you didn’t get regular haircuts during the summer months to prevent split ends from getting out of hand, get a post-summer trim,” says Olivia Colacci, hairstylist and founder of TwentySeven Toronto.
- Take on a strategic commitment to conditioning. “While most people with fine hair will avoid conditioners, saying it is too heavy, a good nourishing routine is essential… just run a bit of product through your ends before rinsing,” says Hill.
- When it comes to styling, treat your inherently delicate texture to a less is more approach. “Blow-dry hair upside down to get the most volume. For fine hair, I recommend lowering the temperature of heated styling tools: there is no need to go higher than 330ºF,” says Colacci. She also relies on a star product. “The göt2b POWDER’ful Volumizing Powder works with just a dash on the roots.” Read on for the right products to help turn your hair around this season.
