Seasonal beauty refresh
With the seasonal shift of summer to fall, now is a good time to give your beauty routine a revamp. As summer’s heat and humidity make way for autumn’s cooler, dryer air, your skin and hair may need a bit of help adjusting the change in weather, and of course, a style refresh to welcome the season can’t hurt!
We asked hair and makeup artist Jessica Haisinger for her expert advice on which products to shelve and which to swap in to keep hair, skin, and makeup at its best.
Swap your beach wave salt spray for a volumizing styling spray
Salt sprays can be drying to your hair, which is part of the reason they work so well during the humid summer months. For a fall-friendly take on the style, Haisinger says to “trade in your salty, sun-soaked locks for soft texture and sexy volume.” She loves Oribé Dry Texturizing Spray ($47, 250 mL) for its volume-boosting effect and gentle hold.
Swap your leave-in conditioner for a nourishing hair mask
Speaking of dry hair, a light leave-in conditioner probably isn’t going to cut it during the colder months. Haisinger recommends using an intensive hydrating mask once a week for an extra dose of moisture. This will help strengthen and smooth stressed-out strands. Try Garnier Fructis Damage Eraser Strength Reconstructing Butter ($6, 250 mL), which is formulated with plant-based proteins and fruit concentrate, and nourishing Cupuaçu Butter.
Swap your oil-control cleanser for an oil-based cleanser
Switching to an oil-based cleanser that respects skin’s natural need for balance can actual benefit all skin types-even oily ones, says Haisinger. Say what? It’s true. Give Haisinger’s pick a try: “Dermalogica Precleanse Oil ($53,150 mL) is an absolute must in my life,” she says. “It helps to remove makeup and surface oils without stripping the skin of important moisture.”
Swap your cooling toner for exfoliating pads
On hot summer days, spritzing yourself with a light, cooling toner is all about heat relief. Now that we’re back to more comfortable temperatures, switch your water-based spritzer for something harder working. “Use gentle exfoliating pads to slough off dry, rough skin after a summer in the sun,” says Haisinger. Try Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix ($13, 60 pads).
Swap your powder bronzer for a creamy highlighter
“Give ‘strobing’ a try this season,” recommends Haisinger. She describes this complexion-enhancing technique as “a more subtle alternative to contouring,” which focuses on highlighting, rather than creating shadows. Haisinger’s favourite product for this is Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector ($50, 50 mL). Along with subtle luminosity, the formula delivers a blend of free-radical fighting vitamins, emollient avocado oil, redness-reducing witch hazel, and soothing aloe extract.
Swap your tinted moisturizer for hydrating primer and liquid foundation
If you plan to recreate your fading summer glow with blushes, powders and highlighters, you’ll want to give your complexion a good base first. Haisinger suggests first applying a moisturizing primer like Make Up For Ever Step 1 Skin Equalizer Hydrating Base ($43, 30 mL), which has an “H20 Complex” for dehydrated skin. Then, layer on a liquid foundation with a smooth finish, such as Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation ($50, 30 mL). “This gives the coverage without looking heavy or cakey,” she explains. Bonus: The foundation is formulated with spheres of hyaluronic acid for time-released hydration.
