Canadian activewear brands that’ll get you out of your workout wardrobe rut
At times, it can feel, for us BH editors, that we’re in athleisure more than any other type of clothing in our wardrobes. Perhaps it’s because we always seem to be running from new fitness studio to new fitness craze, perhaps it’s simply because they’re comfy, or perhaps it’s to play into our roles. A 2012 study found clothing can influence attitude and behaviour—so what we wear, we become, basically. And making sure our workout wardrobe is up to the standards of who we want to be—and how we want to perform at yoga, barre, spin, whatever—just may be key for our professional and fitness successes.
So, we rounded up five of the best ways to update your activewear now, which can help you do even better at whatever workout craze you’re into. Bonus: All of these picks are from our go-to Canadian athleisure brands.
A pretty onesie for ballet workouts
This onesie called “The Moss,” named after the supermodel, is a cool-kid wardrobe staple. It can be worn with jeans on your day-to-day, but our favourite way to wear it is with loose-fitting bottoms for ballet class. It helps us feel like ballerinas, especially when we team it with our hair in a bun, while the loose bottoms we wear with it make it easier on our thighs and glutes to lift our legs into a retiré.

Wide-leg pants inspired by ’00 pop stars
One of our absolute favourite workouts is dance workouts. They get our heart rate up, our endorphins up, they make us sweat, and they make us forget we’re even working out. Nineties- and noughties-based workouts are our preference (think the dance routine from the Hit Me Baby One More Time music video) so we love teaming wide-leg pants, like this pair from Titika, with a bra to play up our inner Britney. (Learn why dance workouts are great for anyone who hates exercising.)

A chic and sporty spring topper
A great jacket can make any look more stylish—even a workout look. This oversized topper from Michi, with its cinched waist, pairs perfectly with yoga pants or bike shorts for a chic en-route ensemble. (Here’s how to find the perfect pair of leggings.)

Fast-drying bottoms for your major sweat sesh
Hot yoga, sweat barre, HIIT—these are a few of the classes in which we discovered we have very active sweat glands in every area of our bodies. What we’ve also discovered is our need for activewear that hides our sweat—or activewear that dries our sweat super quickly. Enter Lululemon’s new Everlux collection, which features breathable fast-drying fabrics designed for super sweaty workouts.
Invigorate High-Rise Tight 25”, $138, lululemon.com
A sustainable set
We love new Canadian yogawear brand Free Flow Active for a few reasons: The pieces are comfortable, they come in pretty prints and patterns, and they’re sustainable. Every item is made out of Econyl, a regenerated nylon from ocean waste. What’s more, with every purchase made, Ocean Mimic cleans up 5kg of garbage off beaches around the globe.
Wildflower Bra, $65, freeflowactive.com, Wildflower Legging, $90, freeflowactive.com
