1. Split ends
Although split-ends are a year round problem, they can be worsened in the winter, when hair dries out even more than usual. According to Susan Boccia, Schwarzkopf Professional‘s national trainer, the best way to rid your locks of split ends is to get a haircut. In addition, Boccia recommends using a product aimed at preventing split ends before they start because it’s much easier to prevent damage than to repair it. Look for products that include hydrating ingredients, such as silicone oil.

BC Hair Therapy Repair Rescue Sealed Ends ($18)
Nexxus PRO•MEND Leave-In Treatment Crème ($13)
2. Dry scalp
To prevent dryness and irritation on the scalp, which is caused by dehydration due to extreme temperatures, Boccia once again recommends using hair products that contain silicone oil. This moisture-focused ingredient will keep both hair and scalp balanced and hydrated, so they can stand up against the elements. Products with panthenol are also great for preventing an itchy scalp because this ingredient has the ability to bind moisture so it lasts longer. According to Boccia, hyaluronic acid is another key ingredient to look for. Of course, these ingredients only work for mild dry scalps-if you suffer from a medical condition, you may need medicated products to solve the problem instead.
Two to try:
Moroccanoil Dry No More Scalp Treatment ($36)
Fructis and Anti-Dandruff Dry Scalp Shampoo ($5)
3. Frizz
In general, curly hair is frizz-prone, due to the fact that it’s drier and more porous than fine hair. In winter, extreme temperatures will damage curly hair, as well as chemically processed hair, and dry it out further. The best way to tame your frizz is to opt for a leave-in conditioner or leave-in treatment with key ingredients such as panthenol and hyaluronic acid. Boccia says the moisture will last longer when the treatment is left in rather than rinsed out right away, and will help prevent breakage.

Live Clean Exotic Nectar Smooth and Shine Cream ($7)
Living Proof No-Frizz Styling Treatment ($28, Sephora)
4. Static
Static can be a real problem in winter, especially for fine hair. In order to keep it under control, Boccia suggests selecting a hydrating conditioner, as moisture will help to prevent static. Plus, conditioners come in a variety of formulas for every hair type out there, so you’re sure to find one that will rid you of static without weighing down your ‘do.

Ojon Shine & Protect Conditioner ($28, Sephora)
TresEmmé Naturals Moisture Conditioner ($7)
5. Flat hair
For women with fine hair, this category is one you’ll know all too well. The problem with fine hair, aside from being static-prone, is that it lacks volume. In winter, harsh wind can be your ultimate enemy, ravaging your locks and leaving them limp and lifeless. Look for volume-boosting shampoos and lightweight conditioners to hydrate your hair without weighing it down. Boccia suggests looking for products with water lily extract and bamboo. These ingredients are known for being both light and ultra-nourishing.
Two to try:
Schwarzkopf BC Bonacure Volume Boost Shampoo & Repair Rescue Conditioner ($14.50 and $15.50)
TresEmmé 24-Hour Body Foaming Mousse ($6)
