WEGO Health is challenging patients, caregivers, health care providers or anyone with an interest in health, to write 30 blog posts in 30 days as part of Health Activist Writer’s Month. Writing prompts are provided to keep your creative juices flowing, and it was Monday’s prompt ‘Find a quote that inspires you (either positively or negatively) and free write about it for 15 minutes’ that caught my eye.
Searching the twitter-verse, I came across AnneMarie’s blog. She is a five-year cancer survivor, and the quote she chose to write about was, ‘at least you got a good cancer‘. Like her, I cringe when I hear those words. To me, ‘good cancer’ is an oxymoron.
Without repeating her post verbatim, AnneMarie’s blog is a great example of how keeping a blog’essentially an online diary’can provide comfort and support for those dealing with illness. As noted in a blog post by the Mayo Clinic, it can be helpful for patients to share their treatment progress through a WordPress, Weebly, or private blogging account. This online journal may ease the stress of having to constantly update friends and family on their condition.
Through a blog, both patients and caregivers can cultivate words of encouragement, reflect on their journey to recovery and share their experiences. I personally find that blogging is a great way to connect with people.
