Almonds are the most nutrient-dense tree nut, and serve as an excellent source of vitamin E and magnesium. They’re also a good source of calcium, protein and fibre.
Now, a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN) has found that whole almonds have approximately 20 percent fewer calories than originally thought.
Researchers used a new method of measurement, which allowed them to determine the number of calories in almonds actually digested and absorbed. (According to the study’s authors, some of the fat in almonds may be excreted with the almond fibres.) The results? A one-ounce serving of almonds (about 23 almonds) has just 129 calories versus the 160 calories previously thought (and the number of calories that are currently listed on the Nutrition Facts Panel).
The study’s author’s also hypothesize that other nuts may also be lower in calories than thought. Pistachio’s anyone?
