If you’re thinking of joining a choir, a new study might provide the final push you need to start singing.
The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology, shows how choir singing promotes well-being and could lower blood pressure.
The study authors found that because choir singers synchronize their breathing, something peculiar happens: their hearts also start to beat at the same rate.
This coupling "has a soothing effect, and it is beneficial for cardiovascular function," the study’s authors wrote.
They also compared this effect to yoga breathing, which has been shown to have beneficial effects on blood pressure and heart rate.
Are you in a choir? Do you find singing in a group calming and beneficial?
