They may make our legs look long and lean, but according to one U.S doctor, skinny jeans can also be harmful to our health.
After Dr. Karen Boyle of the Greater Baltimore Medical Center noticed patients coming in complaining of tingling, numbness and pain in their upper legs, she connected the symptoms with a nerve disorder.
“This disorder is called Miralsha Parasthetica and it’s a disorder that occurs when one of the nerves that runs in the outer part of a thigh gets compressed,’ Boyle told ABC. ‘The pressure on it causes symptoms of tingling, numbness and pain in the outer part of the thigh.”
Like to wear heels with your skinny jeans?
Boyle doesn’t recommend it. Besides all the other damage they can do to your feet, heels also force your pelvis to tilt; so pairing them with tight jeans can make the symptoms worse.
Don’t want to give up your form-fitting denim?
Boyle cautions that if you ignore the pain and continue to wear them, you could end up with permanent nerve damage.
Luckily, the solution is a cute one: Dresses.
In a previous study on the nerve disorder in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, Dr. Malvinder S. Parmar, a medical director in Timmins, Ontario, found that for women who experienced burning and tingling after wearing ‘hiphuggers,’ the symptoms resolved after 4 to 6 weeks of wearing loose-fitting dresses.
