If you’re looking for a delicious (and affordable) way to lower your blood pressure, you’re in luck.
A new study shows that drinking beet juice can lower blood pressure in as little as one day, because of its dietary nitrate content.
‘Our hope is that increasing one’s intake of vegetables with a high dietary nitrate content, such as green leafy vegetables or beetroot, might be a lifestyle approach that one could easily employ to improve cardiovascular health,’ lead author Amrita Ahluwalia told the American Heart Association.
Health Canada recommends that adults get 7 to 10 servings of vegetables and fruit each day, but Ahluwalia says that getting even one serving is better than none.
“If one could eat just one (fruit or vegetable) a day, this is one more than nothing and should be viewed as positive.”
She might just be on to something. As this study shows, if you only had one serving of beets a day, you’d still see major health benefits.
