The Best Ways to Defrizz Your Hair

Wavy, curly and coarse hair, is especially prone to frizz because it’s naturally drier. In humid weather, thirsty hair cuticles lift up in an attempt to absorb moisture from the air, which, of course, creates more frizz. No matter what your hair type, we’ve got five different ways you can tame your poofy locks this summer.

1. Lock In Your Hair’s Moisture

To avoid feeling like a puffball, supplying your hair with its own “moisture cocktail” in the form of truly hydrating, sulfate-free shampoo, conditioner and styling products is key. Look for ingredients like glycerine, natural fruit and nut oils and butters. “Many shampoos can be overcleansing and actually make hair drier and frizzier,” says Kristjan Hayden, a pro hairstylist and creative director for Aveda Canada.

2. Chat With Your Stylist

When you’re getting a cut, celebrity hairstylist Richard Collins suggests making sure that your stylist avoids thinning shears and razors, which can cause breakage and result in more frizz.

3. Don’t Go Out With Wet Hair

For any hair type, it’s important to allow your locks to dry 100 percent before leaving the house, which will help seal the cuticles and cut down on frizz forming once you’re outdoors.

4. Use The Right Brush

Brush your hair frequently with a natural-bristle brush, which will help distribute your scalp’s oils from your roots to your ends and help tame fuzzy hair.

5. Short Hair Survival Tip

When frizz takes over your cropped cut, it can leave your hair looking extra-puffy. “Overcleansing can create puffiness because it removes all your hair’s natural oils,” says Hayden. “Instead, try rinsing every other day and using conditioner.”
