Today marks the second annual World Humanitarian Day, a day observed by the United Nations to hounour those who work to deliver aid and relieve suffering all over the world. The date commemorates the 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Iraq that killed 22 humanitarian workers.
The theme of the day is to honour humanitarians who have lost their lives doing work in the field. In a year when humanitarian work has been so desperately needed, what with the earthquake in Haiti, the mudslide in China and the tragic flooding in Pakistan, it’s more important than ever to show our support for humanitarians now working to distribute aid and medical care to those in need around the world.
