New research from the University of Melbourne reveals that people who wear glasses aren’t nerds or social outcasts—in fact, they’re more likely to be agreeable and open than their non-bespectacled peers. The study analyzed 633 twins and a comparative group of 278 family members over four years.
As someone who started wearing glasses in grade four, I’m cheering this news. I personally found the stigma of wearing glasses so annoying that I finally got laser-eye surgery eight years ago. It’s changed my life, but it’s not for everyone: according to Reuters Health, the US FDA is looking into the long-term benefits and concerns of LASIK surgery. Sometimes I even wish I wore glasses again, just so I can wear some of the cute new frames.
Speaking of which, did you see the article, "Everyday Ripoffs", in the latest issue of our sister publication, Reader’s Digest Canada? (It’s on newsstands now.) They point out that opticians “can and do mark up frames by as much as 1,000 percent.” Yikes. It’s enough to make even an "agreeable and open" glasses wearer scream.
