Events: One of a Kind Show

Shopping can be a good exercise. Take the One of a Kind Show, an artisan show happening in Toronto March 30 to April 3, 2011. My mom and I go every year, and inside the Direct Energy Centre‘s over-a-million-square-foot conference floor, we spend around three hours, walking up and down the aisles, peaking in at booths and carrying our haul of one-of-a-kind jewelry and knickknacks.

Think I’m kidding? Together, we burn more than 1,000 calories. Not bad for an afternoon spent leisurely chatting and shopping.

But there are some interesting artisans to check out in this blog post, even if you’re not in the area. The One of a Kind Show’s Vancouver edition isn’t until the end of this year.

 

Look Great

We’re always talking about going local when it comes to food, but beauty products are another way to support Canadian companies. Matter uses natural ingredients in its products. They’ve just launched some new skin care products: Neroli Water Facial Mist and Exfoliating Cream Cleanser. The cute travel kits and body butters are shown above, too.

Get Healthy

I stopped in my tracks when I saw these wrap jackets and bottoms made by Canada’s Luved. The cozy cotton jersey knits in pretty Easter colours made me want to hit a yoga class just so I could wear them. I love that it’s all one-size-fits-all. What’s with the crazy small sizes on most yoga clothes anyways?? (Sorry about the side rant… moving on…)

Eat Well

Of all the booths at the OOAK show, this was the only booth we were told we had to, no MUST, check out. Saigon Soul Food is a small food company, and offers makes homemade sauces and spring rolls. I recommend the gluten-free vegetarian spring rolls, dipped in Spicy Roasted Garlic Plum sauce.

Embrace Life

If home is where the heart is, then it should be pretty. I fell in love with these adorable wall plaques by Salt Spring Island, B.C.’s Cedar Mountain. I heart the positive messages, charming images and how you can mix and match them. Plus, I love anything French, so I’d include the fleur-de-lis block in my collection.
