Camila Mendes Is Done With Dieting — And So Are These Other Celebs!
Being a celebrity doesn’t necessarily mean you’re on a crazy diet. Riverdale’s Camila Mendes and a few other big names have quit the diet train for good.
Technically, everyone has a diet — it’s whatever food you eat
But we all know there’s an array of diets promising to make you look your best, whether it’s simple calories-in-calories-out, ketogenic or the good old cabbage soup diet — and they’re usually restrictive. However, these celebrities are ditching this mentality in lieu of a healthier lifestyle, and a better relationship with food and their bodies. Since research tells us diets don’t work long-term — in fact, several studies indicate dieting is actually a predictor of future weight gain — we think these celebs might be onto something.
Here’s how to actually lose weight and forget about dieting.
1. Demi Lovato
The actress/singer, who has been outspoken about battling an eating disorder, has abandoned dieting to further her recovery. “I stopped dieting and have gained a little weight, so it’s been a struggle,” Lovato told People. “But at the same time, I’m happier because I’m not restricting myself from certain foods and I’m no longer food shaming myself.” She continues that this is an important step on her journey to mental wellness. “As someone recovering from a food disorder, it’s something that I want to put out there that you don’t have to diet in order to be happy.”
2. Camila Mendes
The Riverdale star (she plays Veronica, naturally) shared a statement on her Instagram account this week, using the hashtag #DoneWithDieting. “When did being thin become more important than being healthy?” Mendes wrote. Her decision came after a thought-provoking question from her naturopath, who asked her “What other things could you be thinking about if you didn’t spend all your time thinking about your diet?” Mendes realized she was wasting a lot of mental energy thinking about dieting. “At some point in my life, I allowed my obsession with being thin to consume me, and I refused to make room in my mind for any other concerns,” wrote Mendes. “My passion for education, cinema, music, etc. — all the interests that used to occupy my mind — had been eaten away by my desire to be thin, and it made me miserable.”
With that in mind, the actress is moving on in a big way, and inspiring others to follow suit. “I’m done believing in the idea that there’s a thinner, happier version of me on the other side of all the tireless effort.” She says she’s sick of the toxic and incomplete narrative in the media surrounding thinness and dieting: “A healthy body is the ideal body type, and that will look different for every person.”

3. Jennifer Lawrence
While the actress has no issues with training intensely for a role, she refuses to diet for one. “I’m never going to starve myself for a part,” the actress told Elle. “I don’t want little girls to be like, ‘Oh, I want to look like Katniss, so I’m going to skip dinner’… I was trying to get my body to look fit and strong – not thin and underfed.” While fitness is a part of her everyday lifestyle, deprivation is not. “I do Pilates every day. I eat, but I work out a lot more than a normal person,” she told Harper’s Bazaar.
