A Celeb-Loved Pro Shares 3 Ways to Refresh Your Tresses
Here's to delivering major hairstyle envy all summer long.
Sarah Paulson, Amber Heard and January Jones have more in common than serious acting talent: They all trust one woman to deliver major hairstyle envy. “I like finding where the line of undone and modern meets,” says Bridget Brager, a celebrity hairstylist for Herbal Essences. “Sometimes it’s as easy as adding a strong part to a brushed-out wave or playing with textures or the shape of the hair around the face.”
#1: Embrace your curves
There’s never been a better time to have anything but straight hair. Brager’s advice: Lean in. “For wavy textures, I love bumping up the wave around the face,” she says. “Use a one-inch curling iron, hold it vertically and wrap sections around the barrel. It is quick and really packs a punch.”
Got curls? “Make sure to see your hairstylist every eight to 10 weeks for a trim,” she says. “Curly hair tends to be drier, and trimming the ends of your curls helps keep hair from breaking and looking fried.”
#2: Pump up the volume
Going beyond its ability to cleanse greasy roots, dry shampoo imparts volume, making it a game changer for those with fine, straight hair. (But first, make sure to read up on the hidden dangers of dry shampoo.) “Using it as a styling product gives hair more of an undone feel by allowing the lengths to gain more texture, like bedhead,” says Brager. “At night, put your hair into a loose braid, undo the braid when you wake up and use dry shampoo from root to end.”
#3: Just do it
Cropped curls? Blunt bangs? A whole new hue? Go for it! “I like to remind my clients that there are no rules, and if they don’t believe that, they should know that rules are meant to be broken,” says Brager. “Try new things, and try them often. Don’t get stuck feeling like you can only pull off one look – one kind of curl, hairstyle or colour.”
