Beauty trend: Better packaging

Today, I received a  little bit of eco-friendly poetry from Éminence, a Vancouver-based company of organic skin care from Hungary, along with a selection of samples of their fall products.

"The packaging peanuts used in this box are made of 100 per cent vegetable starch, are non-toxic, dust-free and biodegradable, dissolve in water."

So, what if the punctuation isn’t perfect? I was impressed with the fact that those protective popcorns weren’t clinging to my (light grey linen summer) sweater and that they weren’t going straight to landfill perpetuity.

For beauty stories that we’re working on at Best Health or, in the normal course of events, cosmetic companies kindly and routinely send samples in the hopes we’ll feature their products in the magazine and on the website.  Packages arrive, some more friendly than others. I’ve become swift and efficient with the X-Acto knife. Occasionally I wrestle with something that only a crane could open. There’s one brand that packed their high-science skin care tube in a clamshell, then an acrylic box, and then in a cardboard box’and if memory serves me correctly, there was bubble wrap in the mix too, tightly bound with packaging tape that I couldn’t cut through.

I appreciate that these products need protection in transit, but by the time I reached the precious cargo, I didn’t care if it regenerated, rejuvenated or recharged’I needed to be resuscitated.

So, thanks Éminence for the thoughtful packaging. Two thumbs up.
