Beauty news: Clarins Super Restorative Day cream

French skin care company Clarins puts a lot of research into sourcing plants that are exceptional and well tolerated in skin care and that can be procured through sustainable agriculture. That was part of the message at a presentation of its new moisturizer targeted to women 50+ created to help firm slackened skin.

Super Restorative Day Illuminating Lifting Replenishing, an anti-aging wrinkle cream, features extract of harungana from Madagascar, which Clarins says has regenerating powers that can bolster fibroblasts. These cells play a key role in youthful skin and collagen production but weaken during menopause and estrogen loss. (At menopause, the production of estrogen can decrease by up to 50 percent, says Clarins.)

At the presentation was Caroline Debbasch, Clarins’ Paris-based scientific communication director, an expert in the area of safety in cosmetics with a background in pharmacy and biology.

She made a point to me about the perils of skin care fickleness and switching around. "Don’t treat skin care like wearing shoes," Debbasch said in an interview. "It’s important to find a cream that gets along well with your skin and to keep using it. You need to have an addiction to a product [to see results]."

A good reminder if you’ve invested in an expensive product.

Super Restorative Day also contains shea and mango butters and has a sensorial velvety texture and soft floral scent. It’s coming to Canada in February 2014, and is $125 for 50 mL.
